Meisters: These humans possess exceptional wavelengths, which allows them to be paired with and wield Death Weapons. The DWMA characterizes these students on a three-star system based on their capabilities. One-star meisters are the lowest level, and are sent on missions for the sole sake of gathering souls to help develop their partners into Death Scythes. Two-star and three-star meisters tend to be sent on missions outside of merely soul gathering, as they are more capable combatantly and otherwise. Most students are one-star meisters, Maka is a two-star, and both Stein and Sid are three-stars. Meister abilities include: wavelength communication, wavelength energy generation, soul perception, wavelength injection, and weapon-resonance utility. Meister tags, for DWMA meisters that are not paired, are blue.

  • Shinigami:
Limited to Lord Death, Death the Kid, and family (though those on-site were NOT created by the same means), they are the most powerful meisters in existance, Lord Death specifically being a god. Mabaa and Asura, being technically a Shinigami himself, are the only ones said to be able to rival a full shinigami. They are human-like in appearance. Their abilities include, but are not limited to: Expert-Master combatant, exceptional-godly wavelength, Madness of Order, exceptional intellect, shinigami powers (originating from the Lines of Sanzu), soul perception, and versatile meister capabilities.

Death/Demon Weapons: These humans have the ability to transform into living weapons. Originally created over eight hundred years ago by Arachne, they are largely discrimminated against by the general public (as not all weapons are able to master themselves) and are both sought by and seek Kishin Eggs and witches alike (include full-blown Kishins and warlocks/sorcerers). At the DWMA, weapons are paired with meisters, who are capable of wielding them. Together, they train, generally with the ultimate goal of turning the weapon into a Death Scythe, a weapon capable of, and strong enough to, be(ing) wielded by Lord Death/Shinigami himself. Their abilities can include: weapon transformation (metamorphosis), wavelength communication, multiplier/amplifier, elemental capabilities, soul consumption, autonotomy (uncommon/rare), and (RARELY) polymorphosis. Weapons can be ranked alongside their meisters.

Death Scythes: The most powerful Death/Demon weapons in the world of Soul Eater, these weapons qualify as, and have earned the right to be, weapons wielded by Death itself. Having consumed ninety-nine Kishin Egg souls and a single witch/sorcerer soul, in that order, they are far more powerful than any normal weapon. Considered to be fully leveled, their abilities include: all those of Death Weapons, form manipulation, additional abilities dependent upon the witch/sorcerer soul that they consume, and improved performance, such as no longer needing to replace their own body parts for partial transformation.

Dark Weapons: In addition to all those abilities afforded to them by their Death/Demon Weapon gene, Dark Weapons also possess abilities that reflect the very nature of the corruption their souls possess. Dark Weapons are, initially, no different from their regular counterparts; the change occurs when they consume a pure human soul. They are born of the person's personal fears, and are at a far higher risk of falling to madness. The innocent souls do grant them a higher power boost and threshold than other weapons, but as part of their corruption, they are at a high risk of, and eventually will, consume(-ing) whoever wields them.

Demon Blade/Sword: The Dark equivalent to a Death Scythe, having consumed ninety-nine innocent souls and a witch/sorcerer soul, these weapons are worthy partners to Kishins themselves. They are remarkably rare, and their additional abilities include: both enhanced defense and strength, soul devouring, and madness. Demon Blades can be melted down to create Black Blood, rendering them as both the substance and a Dark Weapon, unable to ever transform into a human again.

Witches/Sorcerers: All female or all male respectively, these non-human, magical beings often have animal-based themes and always have purple souls. Sorcerers are more powerful. Witches and Sorcerers/Wizards/Warlocks alike are prone to the destructive sway of magic, though rare cases do arrive where this sway holds no influence on the magic wielder. In order to cast spells, all witches and sorcerers must recite their unique mantra. Their abilities include: magical capabilities, flight, spiritual flexibility, meister capabilities, longetivity, and portal manifestation. Typically speaking, the DWMA is skeptical of, and against, witches and sorcerers alike.

Kishin Eggs (Evil Humans)/Kishins: The bi-product of consuming at least a single human soul, Kishin Eggs run the risk of becoming full-blown kishins; technically, Dark Weapons and Demon Blades are kishin eggs. Due to the extra power afforded by the consumption of innocent souls versus kishin souls, they have additional abilities not available to the average human. These include both unique physiology and increased power, at the cost of the person's own sanity. Kishins, on the other hand, are the dark, mad and fear embodiements, and thus equivalent, of a god, or Lord Death himself. Their madness wavelengthes are large and powerful enough to both consume and corrupt the entirity of the globe. The only canon Kishin is Asura, and thus they are symbollicaly represented by three vertical eyes. The only weapons a Kishin would wield would be Demon Blades, though they are far more likely to consume or absorb than use them.

Clowns: The physical representation and embodiment of madness, Clowns are most commonly created by Kishins themselves, though anyone with a powerful enough Madness wavelength could create one. They are nearly impossible to create, as there needs to be a substantial amount of madness in an area, powerful enough to affect the objects and land itself, to gather together and create the body from what surrounds it.

Monsters: The most diverse category of all character types, monsters are, in short, anything on-site or in canon that is NOT any of the above types. Canon monsters include, but are not necessarily limited to, Blair, Free, Mosquito, and Zombie Sid. They are more powerful than humans, and may have abilities such as unique physiology and magic and/or meister capabilities. Like meisters, witches, and sorcerers, they tend to follow some sort of theme.
